Let's see. Accoutrements
Let's see. Accoutrements means belongings, all the added-on things. Probably not necessary things. It comes from the French language, of course.
It's interesting to me how I can feel the meaning of a word and not know how to express it.
I have to see how the word bulwarks was used. I think it's like ramparts. If I go to look, I'll lose what I've written, so I'll close now and come back. Hang on!
Okay, I did a Google search.
Okay, I did a Google search. Got more information than you could possibly need.
Accoutrements does mean something non-essential. Here's what I found ( I put in orange the meaning that applies to the Heavenletter):
Refers to the cartridge box, bayonet belt and scabbard worn by a soldier. For light infantry this would include a shot bag and powder horn.
1. An accessory item of equipment or dress. Often used in the plural.
2. Military equipment other than uniforms and weapons. Often used in the plural.
3. accouterments or accoutrements Outward forms of recognition; trappings: cathedral ceilings, heated swimming pools, and other accoutrements signaling great wealth.
Bulwark is also as I thought:
1. A wall or embankment raised as a defensive fortification; a rampart.
2. Something serving as a defense or safeguard: "We have seen the necessity of the Union, as our bulwark against foreign danger" James Madison.
3. A breakwater.
4. The part of a ship's side that is above the upper deck. Often used in the plural.
tr.v. bul•warked, bul•wark•ing, bul•warks
1. To fortify with a wall, embankment, or rampart.
2. To provide defense or protection for.
Does this help, dear one? Thanks so much for asking!
With love and blessings,
Gloria

Beloved Berit,
Be sure to know it is never any trouble. I love to deal with words, and I'm sure it's good to do, for you to ask a question, and for me to play with it. So please don't stop.
I guess I used Google because I didn't quite trust my own understanding enough. I also love finding out the origin of the words. I never would have guessed that accoutrements started out from the military!
God bless you!
With love, Gloria
