HL #3701 A Thief of Love
Dear Gloria
in the following extract:
"Ego is an opiate, and it lets you down every time. Ego is very small. It blinds you and deafens you. It sets traps for you all the time. It is a mine field.
Strengthen your heart, and ego is automatically weakened. Down with ego. Up with heart.
Ego is skinny-livered. Heart is like a thrush’s throat and beats fulsomely. Hurray for heart. Boo for ego.
"
what is the meaning of "thrush's throat" in the context of the heart? A thrush's throat is an infection...
And, is a skinny-liver the opposite of a fast or high liver?
Thanks

skinny-livered; thrush's throat
Normand, you have probably searched yourself for "skinny-livered" and found exactly one reference on the whole internet – and one that doesn't tell you the meaning. I ran a search for "livered" next, learning that composite terms containing "livered" appear to be about courage, guts etc. For instance lily-livered or white-livered seem to imply a lack of courage. If you are lily-livered, you are gutless or faint-hearted. Skinny-livered may mean approximately the same. Gloria will tell us.
As for the thrush, I think it's about the pulsating throat when it sings. Try to find a video. But again, Gloria will tell us.
Beloved Jochen, I think you
Beloved Jochen, I think you have told us!
The best I know, this may be the first time in the history of the world that the expression skinny-livered has ever been used! It must mean the same as lily-livered. I have to wonder if God said lily-livered and I misheard skinny!
God bless Normand for his questions!
And, yes, thrush -- the pulsating throat. A thrush is a real bird. It could be the whole name is wood thrush. Something like that?
Just a note -- my computer was giving me trouble again yesterday and the evening before. Thank goodness that Jochen can be relied on to take care of translator questions for us. And anyone else, please chip in too.
