I have a question in the Heavenletter number 5156 Behold Yourself Like a Blazing Sunrise

In this paragraph: " To love God, you can accept. To be God, you don’t want the responsibility. You fear failure. It is one thing to flunk as a human being. To be a God Who Could Be Lacking would do you in. Too terrible to even think about."

I can´t understand the end of this sentence... "To be a God Who Could Be Lacking would do you in." What does it mean " Would do you in"...

It can also be used in a milder form as when you have worked to the point of exhaustion, you might say "I'm all done in." You would not say this in formal English.

Sometimes, as in this Heavenletter, it is open to question as to whether it means literally kill or just cause much distress, but that could also be true if it had said "would kill you". Maybe there is an expression in Portuguese that has that almost joking quality for something that isn't really a joke if taken literally.

Just as we might say, for example: "It would kill me to fail this final exam," we are not being literal at all. We mean we really wouldn't like it. It is important for us to pass this test.

We want to give a translator the simple answer he needs and no more.

It is always interesting to me how God uses such informal language!
