HEAVEN #3627
Posted November 9th, 2010 by paula
I'm translating HEAVEN #3627 All the Imagined Creation, and I just can't find the right meaning for this expression:
Of course, from the point of view of seeming Earth, you are you and
not anybody else. That is as far as you who ran off with the thought
of yourself can get your head around.
I see that it's been translated quite differently in French and German, so I'd like to understand what this '...can get your head around' means.
Thank you for your help.
Paula

Dear Paula,
from what my digital dictionary says, it simply means "to understand".
get one's head around (or round) [usu. with negative ] informal understand or come to terms with something : I just can't get my head around this idea.
Dear Jochen, which digital
Dear Jochen, which digital dictionary do you use? It seems to contain very helpful material for translators as far as expressions (colloquial especially) are concerned. And we know that expressions are the most difficult parts of translation.
Danke.
Dear Normand, the one I use
Dear Normand, the one I use is The Oxford American Dictionary. It came with the operation system on my computer (Mac OSX 10.4 or higher) but you may be able to purchase it somewhere, maybe at Oxford University Press (I never looked).
There are very helpful internet resources as well, for instance http://www.yourdictionary.com/ among many others. But strangely, none of the ones I tried had "get one's head around".
Just now, inspired by you question, I googled the whole phrase. Do it (in "…"), you will be amazed.
Thank you very much, Jochen.
Thank you very much, Jochen. I thought this would be the meaning but I just couldn't quite put it together with '...as far as..'
Love,
Paula

Thanks for the references, Jochen.
I am surprised not to have it on my Mac Pro neither on my MacBook Pro with Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.x)
So I guess it must be available on CD. I'll look for it. And I will try your link and let you know.
Cheers
