With music, you don't listen to drums unless you like drums. Nor do you listen to violins when you prefer drums. You choose the music you will listen to for the affect it has on you. Choose your thoughts the same way. You can do it.

I think this sentence means to say: how the words will affect you.

Yes, as a verb, "affect"
Yes, as a verb, "affect" would make sense, but as a noun it would be an extremely uncommon usage (according to my dictionaries). I changed it.
