From C. M. Yogi in Nepal

Empowering Women in Nepal. A project from C.M Yogi ji about a centre that will give women the opportunity to empower themselves through knowledge and skills. May the Shanti Sewa Ashram be the first of many!

Women's Education Centre

Basic Literacy and Life Skills Training for Women

Background

After having started the hugely successful Helping Children Study project (based in Lalitpur, Kathmandu) aimed at boosting children's education and providing a safe-play environment with a positive philosophy, SSA now hopes to support the mother's themselves through a basic education program and life-skill trainings. Educating women in Nepal is a much needed venture, given that nationwide over 2/3 are illiterate.

In the Ashram area, many of the women are mothers who have never had the opportunity to receive an education or gain professional skills. Coming from marginalised communities and often without the support of a husband, they lead a hard life of menial labour, barely managing to maintain a minimum standard of living for themselves and their children.

The proposal includes:
2 x 2 hours per week for literacy, with the assistance and tuition of a qualified teacher.
2 x 2 hours for life skills training, including handicrafts, sewing and other profitable trainings.

ðIn this way the program aims to provide a basic education, a positive and supportive environment, and skills which could potentially be utilised to provide a supplementary income for the women.

The program will run for FOUR DAYS A WEEK 5PM TILL 7PM

Project details:

Initially the project will run on a 6 month pilot basis targeting a group of approximately 25 women. The first 2-3 months of the project will be funded by Damian Woods at a cost of around 5000 RS per month. Afterwards he will seek sustainable funding from the UK. It is expected that once the project is fully up and running, the monthly budget will be around 12000 RS, 5000- 7000 for qualified tutor and skills trainer, and the remaining money for resources as per the need.

Monthly reports will be required to update for the sponsors (who will be named as and when ascertained) and assess viability.
