A first chapter of a book in progress
This thread was started by me to make the initial chapter of a book I am writing available to those interested. A number of people have asked that I send this to them, but I may have missed some. Hopefully, this thread will repair any oversights.
The short manuscript below is intended as the first chapter of a book that discusses certain scientific research findings that have profound implications for the understanding of the nature of human consciousness and its influences on the events of our world. Toward the end of the book, I am intending to bring readers who have no prior knowledge of Heavenletters to the point where the messages we see every day on these forums are seriously considered.
I am most interested in questions about this chapter like the following:
Does the topic engage your interest and cause you to want to read more chapters?
Would you like me to include more information about any of the topics or events
this chapter covers?
What kinds of questions would you like to see this book address?
Any input, either added here as a comment or sent to me personally will be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Chuck

What you wrote was excellent
What you wrote was excellent and engaging. I felt the sincerity, simplicity and humility, Chuck. It was clear to me that you wrote this for others. I absolutely want to read your book. That you are a physician adds to your credibility. I love that you include the personal. I might see this as an introduction rather than a first chapter. I am guessing that your audience will be scientists as well as laymen. It is for the scientists that I would make this an introduction.
Reading what you have posted here made me drool to read what you have to say about the nature of consciousness. I could respond to your second question better after I read the rest of your book.
What kinds of questions would I want you to address? I don't have a grasp of the nature of consciousness.
You're doing a great job, Chuck.
More later.
With love and blessings,
Gloria
Dear Chuck, This first
Dear Chuck,
This first chapter of your book immediately captured my interest and made me want to read more. While I was proceeding toward the end, a light went on in my heart: I realized that this is a great mission you have here. Somewhere along the history the world passed from a religious world view to a scientific one, and what is missing is a bridge between these two. I don't know of anyone until now studying the role of consciousness in our beings and world from a scientific point of view. This means bringing Heaven on Earth or bringing Earth closer to Heaven. You hit the nail on the head when you say:
Now, I was beginning to find compelling evidence suggesting that science has it all backwards about human consciousness, findings implying that it is consciousness that is actually primary and that it is the physical body that is the secondary phenomenon. To my mind, if there was a primary message from these reports of these after-death experiences, this was it: our consciousness carries on without the support of our physical body.
As a person who is ignorant of science, I loved reading this mixture of personal experiences and scientific information. The personal part made me curious about the rest. But of course, you will want to consider the kind of audience you wish to address.
This is a wonderful work you are doing.
Love,
Paula

Thanks so much, Paula
Thank you, Paula, dear. Your input is priceless. It gives ideas that help me move forward in this process more easily and, I’m sure, more effectively.
The audience I intend to address is the average reader, but one who may lack any real scientific background. I expect that a moderately bright middle school student would follow all the arguments I am planning quite easily. Not that this book wouldn’t be of interest to scientists, and I will write it with the objective to include nothing that would offend scientists by sounding like unscientific “malarky.” Part of my background includes scientific research, so I feel confident that having written research reports for other scientists will stand me in good stead in this regard. Still, an interesting read that entertains a little but stimulates deep thought is the goal, not a scientific tome.
Love, hugs and appreciation……Chuck
I owe a lot to you Gloria
Gloria, hon, I just want to thank you for all the blessings you and your Heavenletters team have given me by your receptivity to God's guidance. I came to Heavenletters searching for a forum of like minded, spritually insightful and loving people who might help me to know how best to put my ideas into words by writing a book I had been planning. That was a different book than I am writing now. What I found was far beyond my wildest dreams! Instead of help writing a book, I received help loosening the chains that had been smothering my heart. Instead of just direction and guidance, which I also received in large measure, I received love and nourishment of spirit that I feel have allowed me to better connect with others through words and ideas. Now, the book which I will be writing, seems a small thing compared to the love of all the beautiful souls with which my life has become entwined, here on these forums.
You came to us wonderful,
You came to us wonderful, Chuck. And now you stay even more wonderful.
I didn't know you wanted to write before you found us! How did you find us, by the way? By us, I mean Heavenletters and this beautiful forum with such incredible people in it!
When you become a best-selling author how happy we will be.
How I found Heavenletters
Gloria, if I am remembering correctly, I found Heavenletters through a comment on a blog by Neale Donald Walsch, when the person making the comment mentioned a particular Heavenletter and included a link. After I read the first letter, I was hooked! I knew I had found something very valuable and irreplaceable.
Dear Chuck, you know what I
Dear Chuck, you know what I think of your book, it is quite remarkable and in my cords.
I see the actual evolution's theory is discussed by you and this is very interesting for me as I have always been puzzled by what they teach us at school like it was "gospel". It is becoming more and more inconsistent to say that all the variety and complexity of life ( now that we can observe both the invisible and Hubble's deep space field ) comes from random selection.
And the mystery of DNA, we can't observe its functioning and think of casuality. Is it believable that an assembly line in a factory is due to chance and works by chance?
And quantum physics. The one who is not completely upset by it has not understood it ( I think it was Niels Bohr to say something of the kind ).
So, thank you for your work!
Niels Bohr was right
Emilia, dear, you point out some very interesting things about quantum physicists. Many of the early formulators of quantum mechanics held very deep discussions about the nature of reality, especially as it was being demostrated in both their data and the implications of their theories. The big problem was that while the theories' predictions have been shown to be 100% accurate, they don't mesh with our everyday, common sense experience. For the most part, modern physicists have just thrown up their hands, they just use the mathematics that the theories direct them to use, and they have stopped questioning why. This will work for a while, but more and more the data is getting even harder to explain.
I think that a true understanding of the data that physicists are gathering has the potential to explain quite a bit about the nature of our consciousness and how the world works. Before this can happen, though, a complete re-examination of our most basic assumptions are in order.
I say these things for those who are interested in them. I do not plan to go into these kinds of issues in any depth in my book, though. It will not be a book for physicists.
Thanks, Emilia, and everyone else for all the wonderful feedback!
life after death
Chuck, I agree with Gloria. I would place this as your introduction and then move into the chapters. I also wouldn't discount the scientific communities finding your book quite interesting. But I can understand why you would target the general public.
The nature of human consciousness. I, like Gloria would like to learn more.
I had my own out of body experience in January 1982. I did not have an opportunity to see a tunnel, as mine was pre-empted by a telephone call that came to the nurses station by my father.
Without going into an abundance of details as to the "whys" (subconscious of course) I began having many problems with my reproductive system and monthly cramps and unexplained pain and loss of blood. This went on for several months.
I was living in Alberta,Cananda at the time, where apparently it was quite common for surgeons to perform hysterectomies. This is what was recommended to me.
In hindsight, there were many things I could have and should have done. But I also believe I was meant to have this surgery. (that is a whole book onto itself)
I did not get a second opinion. And as it turns out, after the surgery, I did see another surgeon who told me clearly all I had was endometriosis, and did not need to have a complete hysterectomy. Too late, the parts were gone. I was 27 at the time. Had never had a child.
So I am out west, my family is in Ontario. My parents are divorcing. No one has any idea I am about to have this surgery. My father and I have had several brief moments in time, where we have had a psychic connection happen. This was one of them.
I went into the surgery thinking, if something happens to me, please take of my labrador, Sam.
I remember looking down at my body. I was on the guerny across from the nurses station on the third floor. There were nurses all around me. One was pumping my chest, another screaming, "we are losing her! she has no pulse." I very clearly remember thinking "that is ok. don't they know this is what I want. I want to die."
Suddenly the telephone rings. One of the nurses shouts, "It is Lynda's father. He is asking to speak with her."
The next I remember is opening my eyes and saying to them, "Please give me the telephone." Needless to say, there were a few gasps, and one of the nurses fainted.
That was in January. I flew home to visit in the summer. My father and I were having a very serious conversation about his divorcing my mother. I asked him then how he knew to call and why he felt the need to call when he did. He told me he was in a meeting, and suddenly could not get me out of his head. He left the meeting to call me at work, where they promptly told him I was in the hospital, but they weren't sure which one. He picked the first one that came up when he called information (as it turns out, the largest is in Edmonton, which would have been the likely choice. I was in a small community hospital on the outskirts). He did not hesitate and called the St. Albert hospital. He says he was guided, because he does not know how all of this happened. There was no problem with reception putting his call immediately to the nurses station.
I told him that what happened on that day returned me to my body, and this lfe. I can say without a doubt, had he not called, I truly don't think I would have returned.
I was ready and willing to die. I don't even think a choir of angels could have sent me back. But, who really knows. I didn't progress to the point that I met any guides, or angels, or masters. Perhaps if I had, they might have convinced me that I still had much work to do.
And so, here I am 28 years later. Still doing my work. And that day, when I think of it, feels as though it just happened.

Unique blessings
Lynda, this is such a lovely, touching tribute to your relationship with your father. “I don’t even think a choir of angels could have sent me back” yet, a phone call from your father did call you back. What a nice Easter message!
Your story attests to the kind of mysterious, unexplained happenings that my book will address. How did your father, in the midst of a business meeting, know that you needed him, and know that it was so urgent he had to interrupt his meeting? And, how could you be viewing this resuscitation scene from a vantage point outside your own body?
I wonder, reading your story, was this an event that re-oriented your approach to life, or was it just in line with what you already knew and believed? It is interesting to me how it seems that many of the readers of Heavenletters have had these kinds of experiences which served to help open our minds to God’s more direct messages. For me, it was the synchronicity of the nearly identical reports of near death experiences, that I knew were independent, and that forced me to take notice. Several other readers have also shared near death experiences that profoundly changed their lives. Gloria, I believe, had a long series of powerful intuitive responses to certain pictures and movies that, in part, led up to her Godwriting.
I also wonder how many people out there in the world have had these kinds of experiences, yet who may feel alone and unaware that many others share their unusual blessing. Perhaps my book, once completed, can offer solace and a perspective that will help them to better realize the gift that was bestowed.
Thanks so much for your beautiful story.......Chuck
unique blessings
Thankyou all so much. I do truly feel loved!
To answer your question, Chuck, it was the beginning of a somewhat different lifestyle. About a year later, I began to take in workshops in a metaphysical centre. I was on a spiritual quest.
I am certain that your book will help many. I can't count the number of times a topic or issue will come up, and quite often words or stories will just flow from me. They are my stories, but it often feels as though someone is speaking the words for me.
And there are many people who, as you said feel alone out there with their experiences. They need a connection.
Shared stories, and questions lead to discussions and ah ha moments.
And I know from personal experience, God loves when we have ah ha moments!
I, for one, can hardly wait for the day your book goes to print . Perhaps you will be out on a book signing tour, and I will be there, asking for my personalized copy.
in love & light,
Lynda
another book perhaps?
Chuck, where is the piece of book everyone is commenting so favorably on? Somehow I missed the connection and would love to read this, especially as I read through the replies and the stories like Lynda's. (Lynda, so glad Dad called and we have the joy of your presence.)
Your comment about how many people restart their lives on a new path has certainly struck me as well. I meet many who credit a near death for jumpstarting their spiritual journey, or at least for pointing to the right path for them. I had a similar experience that I've talked about on this site at various times, so won't bore you with it here.
Perhaps a collection of these stories would make an interesting book as well ... yes, I know you've already thought of it and probably have it half written ... LOL
HUGS--Pam
Wow! What a nice idea!
Pam, dear, thank you so much, your ideas are really helpful. I think you present a GREAT idea, here. It would be a fantastic project for someone to collect and develop a compendium of stories of how Heavenletters readers have started on new paths that eventually open their minds to Heavenletters. I would venture to say that most of us were raised with a view of the world that would not be accepting of the possibility that we might physically read letters from God addressing our individual lives and current world events. The key events in reader’s lives that changed this view would make for a superb book in itself. As we have heard, sometimes it is near death experiences, but I am sure there are many, many ways these changes come about – all quite pertinent and instructive and intensely interesting.
No, I didn’t think of this already, and I am very much involved with my present book project or I would be very tempted to pursue this idea. Maybe one or more of the many bright and articulate people who read these forums might take this idea and run with it?
Love, hugs and best wishes……Chuck

Beloved Pam, I have had the thought to do something with the beautiful comments on this forum. I think they tell a real story without telling it, if you know what I mean. I don't want to make anyone self-conscious about posting. What better introduction to Heavenletters than the amazing comments people post and how they reveal that reading Heavenletters has impacted their lives. God in action lifts us up.
Glad to have you back, Pam!
NEVER MIND THE FIRST SENTENCE ...
I had not scrolled to the top of the page ... please forgive my ignorance ... duh ... am going back to enjoy the excerpt now ...
A change in this forum thread
I have revised my introductory chapter that was originally included in the note that starts this thread. As of today, I am erasing it from that page and including it as an attachment to that note. The previous version of this chapter did not properly set the stage for the rest of the book, as intended. This became clear as I began considering which of the planned chapters should come next to develop a smooth flow to the theme of the book. If anyone wants a copy of the original, for any reason, just send me a note and I will email it to you.
I am very grateful of all the truly marvelous and helpful responses and comments that I have been honored to receive.
Love you all……Chuck
Love the book excerpt! Can't wait to read more :)
Hello Chuck,
I just read your book excerpt, and it sounds GREAT so far! I am very interested to read more!
I thought it was so interesting that you wrote about Betty Eadie in your excerpt, because my life was also dramatically changed by her books. She has been a huge influence on my life, and has opened up my mind to a deeper and more fulfilling spiritual life by the things she has taught in her books. (Especially her book "The Ripple Effect", it's about how everything we do, think, and say affects others either positively or negatively. There were some VERY POWERFUL truths in this one)
Any type of book that delves deeper into these subjects, (in my opinion) would be a wonderful addition to humanity!
My husband is in medical school and he has told me that they teach absolutely NOTHING about spirituality and the mind body connection, and in most cases frown about any mention of God. It is so sad. I like the fact that you are a doctor and you are willing to merge the two fields together to help bridge the gap between the physical and the spiritual realms.
Good luck on your book. I'd definitely like a copy! :)

"Let All you do, be done in LOVE"
NDE's, spirtuality and medical school curriculae
Heather, thank you so much for your lovely comment! When I look back on my life before and after the experiences I describe in my book introduction, there is such amazing contrast. I have always been an optimist, so I have never really had a negative view of life, but early on I lacked a sense of focus and have often been easily paralyzed by doubts. It was like several different contradictory worldviews all seemed to be true and valid, yet it couldn’t be that they were all true. The NDE stories set me on a path to integrate the things I knew were true and see how they are actually compatible and mutually reinforcing. Life is much sweeter these days!
I know what you mean by medical schools being slow to embrace spirituality. My training was at the University of Pennsylvania. I have just good things to say about my education at Penn, but I agree that not a word was spoken about the role of religion or spirituality during my four years there. The leadership at Penn was very open-minded as medical leaders go, too. I doubt things have changed much, but I don’t truly know. What is quite clear to me, though, is that this must change dramatically if mankind is to realize its potential. In effect we have gone down at bit of a blind alley in making our medicine so materialistic and scientific as opposed to spiritualistic and heart-based. We will fix this, in due time.
Your comment is yet another delightful push in the direction I need to go.
Love and hugs……Chuck
PS: I will for sure send an autographed copy to all interested Heavenreaders once this book makes it into the world.

Normand and Chuck,
I just came across this publisher. There are others I can think of for your books as well:
Templeton Foundation Press
Writers Guidelines
Science_bibleTempleton Press was founded in January 1997 as a program of Templeton Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit foundation established by Sir John Templeton. Its mission is to publish scholarly and trade books on a variety of subjects, including the connections between science & religion, spirituality & healing in medicine, the verification of universal spiritual laws, character development, and freedom. Templeton Press publishes trade or scholarly books in these categories:
* Works of scientific inquiry into the realms of theology and spirituality, particularly researched, written, or otherwise supported by the scientific and/or academic community.
* Works of inspiration that combine scientific inquiry with ecumenical, nonsectarian spiritual principles, particularly researched, written, and supported by both the scientific and spiritual communities. Spiritual works can come from someone who either practices a specific religion, follows a certain tradition, or who does not participate in any specific religious or spiritual community. The key is that the work itself presents universal spiritual thought that embraces everyone and affirms that all positive thought or belief systems are possible paths to the "truth."
Could be a match!
Thanks, Gloria
I just do not know where you find the time to be so helpful and so often, Gloria. This does look like a great fit. It seems like it may be a good time to start contacting publishers.

An update on a book in progress
Lynda, my book is coming along very well, thanks for asking. I have never experienced writing like this before. Writing used to be hard work for me, now I love it! I find myself getting impatient with my day to day work and chores; I want to get back to wring as soon as possible. I no longer have the slightest doubt about the value of what I am working on, either, and this is also totally new to me, I used to second guess and worry about what I would be writing. Working on this book gives me energy rather than consuming it.
Here is where things stand today:
I am working on a real introduction, in place of what I formerly called: “The Nature of Consciousness: an introduction” (the new introduction is not available yet).
What was previously called the introduction is now called: “Chapter 1: Two Cardiac Arrests.” This is the same text as before, but endnotes and references have been added. (Note: the references are not in the chapter linked above.)
Chapter 2 is complete and the rough draft is available for those who want to read it. It is called: “Remote Viewing.”
Along with the new introduction, I am also working on Chapter 3: “Remote Influence.” The rough draft is not available yet.
I will put a note on this thread whenever a new chapter is available in rough draft form. If anyone wants either chapter 1 or 2, please put a request in this thread or send me an email. For those who are new to these forums, just click on my name and that gets you to “my page” and a “contact” link.
Thanks, everyone, for the wonderful feedback and encouragement. Thank you, Lynda, for reminding me to update this thread.
Love ya all…….Chuck

Chuck, I am so glad for your book taking form and substance and for you taking so much pleasure in it. Please, can you send me chapter 2?

Thanks so much for your interest, hon. The attachments should be on their way. This book is taking more time than I had thought, but no matter, it is still very rewarding work!

Hi Chuck, Please send me
Hi Chuck,
Please send me chapter 2. This is definitely exciting!
I believe this is the perfect time to be composing your book. The world is ready.
Lot's of light,
Lynda
I need an email address, please
Lynda, dear, I'd love to send the chapter, but I just realized I have no address to send it to. Drop me a short note, hon, and I will have a way to send the chapter.
Beloved Chuck, would you
Beloved Chuck, would you share with us references to Heavenletters in the book you are working on? Thanks!
Heavenletters references
Gloria, dear, I take your question to be concerning references to Heavenletters within the book that is the topic of this thread (the book has no title, as yet). The short answer is that there are no specific references to Heavenletters in the three chapters that I have in rough draft form at present.
A longer and more specific answer is that the book does not have an outline, plan or agenda that is being followed. I have never written anything like this before. It feels like I am sort of putting a large picture puzzle together, as I am writing this book. I have no completed picture to follow, though, like you often find on the top of a picture puzzle box. As I put a piece in place that fits, it feels right and it helps more of the final picture to emerge, but I recognize its contribution only after the pieces of a given section are in place.
I do not know for sure where the book is going or where it will end up, so, I have no answer for the question: Will there be specific chapters about Heavenletters? I will not know until I get there, but I do know that the early chapters seem to be laying the groundwork that is very supportive of the many themes of Heavenletters.
Writing this book is not only enjoyable but even feels therapeutic for me. I also feel a little like a bystander to the process rather than a major player. No matter how it turns out in the end, it is a very worthwhile journey for me to take.
Love ya……Chuck
