QUESTION FOR Heaven # 1972 The Sparkles of the Stream

My children often try to hold onto life, want to affix it in time and place, snap pictures of it as if you could bite down on it.

Does it mean taste it ? have a peace of it ? as if life were a physical thing ?

I agree with you Santhan, you need to see the context and fit the translation into it and sometimes leave the interpretation to the readers.
But I should also say that a good dictionary helps. For example, for this expression, My children often try to hold onto life, want to affix it in time and place, snap pictures of it as if you could bite down on it, I found the translation: bite on meaning to work on something , to dedicate oneself to something. That makes sense in Italian and that's how I corrected the translation. So the sense is that we want to make pictures of life as if we could work on them and change them at our will.
