New Jersey to abolish death penalty

New Jersey has become the first US state in four decades to vote to abolish the death penalty. The move has been hailed by human rights activists as a step towards ending capital punishment. The Democratic-controlled state assembly replaced the death penalty with life imprisonment without parole.
