The Watcher
Life in the world is filled with an exceeding number of interlocking stories. What are the ingredients of every story? Drama, action, pauses in action, events, understanding, misunderstanding, etc. And who is it that moves and wonders and participates in the interlocking stories? Why, you do. People do.
People in stories are called characters, and you are one of the characters in an ongoing story. It is a serial really. And there are stories within the stories. There is perspective. And within every story, there is more than one perspective. Within the story, there is the perceiver of the story and there is the teller of the story. One story may be told from many points of view. Underlying it all, there is a silent observer of the story. There is the wild character, for instance, who runs around and causes trouble or causes delight. There is the comedian. There is the weeper. There is a cast of thousands, millions, billions, and there is no end to them. And each is also a silent observer. Within each member of the cast, there is a silent observe who sits still and observes.
There is an infinite variety of settings. Each room is different. Each town. Each city. Each country. Each of the characters lives in a different world even when he lives in the same room with another character in the story.
Everyone and everything in the story has a certain style and even a certain bravado. Certainly, it takes courage to participate in the story and be blown around in it.
There are war stories and children’s stories and stories of animals. No matter which story, no matter whose it is, you, beloveds, play a part in all of the stories ever enacted and all the stories activated now.
And yet through all the stories you enter and leave, participate in very well or you have just a walk-on part, there is a silent part of you that is the observer. You may be tremendously emotionally-involved, and yet there is a silent part of you that simply observes and is not taken in by the story and the other characters in it. There is the impartial observer aspect of you who is not distracted and who does not weep nor laugh but simply observes and takes it all in his stride. Even at the most dramatic moments, the observer observes. Even if the character is hidden in a closet, the observer within him observes. The observer sees all. We can call him the watcher.
To the watcher, what happens is not of the importance that it is to the player. The watcher is calm. All is equal to the watcher. Win or lose, it’s the same. Foolish or wise, the watcher simply watches and makes nothing of what he watches. The watcher knows that all is an interlude. He knows the enacted story is not real. It is a story.
Within you, beloveds, no matter what tumultuous story you may be involved in, no matter the twists and turns, no matter what character you play this time around, no matter what you and the other players do or do not do, you watch. You see all and are not affected. You simply observe and take no notes.
You have observed many stories, and you have played many roles, and the observing silent watcher knows that none of it makes a difference.
And when a current story, one of billions and trillions, comes to a seeming end, the observer keeps walking and observes himself entering other realms. He enters the Greatest Story. He walks right in even as he knows he was always right there, watching from there, watching the convolutions of the many stories without batting an eye.
The watcher now truly reveals himself. He has risen out of the cast of thousands, and now he knows his Oneness. He was One all along, and now he knows this is the sum of his story.
