The Matter of the Heart
Today you will find occasions to love. Some occasions will be as easy as pie. Before you know it, you will have given love. It will be like you got up on the bus and gave your seat to someone without even thinking about it. Other occasions may not be so easy. You may not even think to get up and give your seat to someone. Or, if you think of it, you prefer not to.
It is not really that in loving you are giving up something. You are gaining something. It is a question of what you are willing to give to yourself. It is a question of how much happiness you want to give to yourself.
It is not that you are self-serving. You are not looking to self-inflate. You are simply looking to make the path of life a little smoother for someone who is going the same way as you. When you smooth the path of someone seemingly else, you inevitably smooth the path for yourself.
Everyone you smile at may not return your smile, yet a smile back is not what you smile for. The person before you is not the one you smile for. You smile for Me. It is I Who catches your smile. I receive it, every single smile of yours. I receive the seat you vacate. I receive the help you give a seeming stranger. I am the Recipient of everything you give. I restoreth your soul, and you leave Me a smile as a tip.
Every step you take is in homage to Me. It is to no other. Whatever people may run through your mind, whatever individual you serve, you are serving Me. There is no one else to serve, Beloveds. No matter the individual before you, you are serving Me. Serve Me well. Serve Me well. Therein lies happiness.
We are not talking about solely your happiness, you understand. By all means, experience happiness, yet happiness is not for yourself alone. Happiness for yourself alone serves only for a short duration. Beloveds, there is no one to serve but Me. You serve the Server.
It is I you save from a fire. It is I you tip your hat to. It is I you smile for. It is for Me that you carry packages. It is for Me that you never mind some of the things you have been minding. It is for Me that you give up littleness and acquire greatness. Everything you do is offered to Me. I am the taster of the food you serve. I am Everything.
I am the One you invite. I am the Guest Who appears at your door. I am the Host of the Universe, and I am your Guest. Invited or uninvited, I am your Guest, and yet I am also the Party-giver. Say hello to yourself. Say hello to Me. It is the Same.
Every kindness you give, you give to Me. And I accept.
No mother turns down the dandelion her child picks to give her. No God in Heaven refuses any offering from you. The altar you leave your gifts at is the altar of the world. How simple and lovely is that.
It is as if you build a bonfire of love that can be seen and felt everywhere. You bring kindling. You bring a leaf. You bring a crumb. You bring a log. You bring a piece of straw. It matters not. It matters that you bring something.
The biggest gift is not always the biggest gift. The smallest gift can be the biggest. The size of the gift is inconsequential. That you give is the heart of the matter, and so you give.
