Is this expression not used
Is this expression not used in other languages? It is used in English. I didn't realize that angst meant fear. I thought it was anxiety or anguish. Maybe they come down to fear anyway.
Stefan, is there also an expression Sturm and Drang -- or am I dreaming it?!!!
Sturm und Drang
My English digital dictionary has a definition of "angst" that is quite good:
angst |a ng (k)st; ä ng (k)st|
noun
a feeling of deep anxiety or dread, typically an unfocused one about the human condition or the state of the world in general : adolescent angst.
• informal a feeling of persistent worry about something trivial : my hair causes me angst.
ORIGIN 1920s: from German, ‘fear, anxiety.’
The expression "sturm and angst" doesn't exist in German. "Sturm und Drang", again my digidict, is this:
Sturm und Drang |ˈ sh toŏrm oŏn(d) ˈdrä ng |
noun
a literary and artistic movement in Germany in the late 18th century, influenced by Jean-Jacques Rousseau and characterized by the expression of emotional unrest and a rejection of neoclassical literary norms.
ORIGIN German, literally ‘storm and stress.’
("Stress" doesn't fit. Drang, in most cases, is "urge". The meaning intended in this context is "impulse", "yearning". )
sturm and angst
Thank you very much for your answer!!
Have a magic day!
Christine
