There was a time that religious people were to undergo suffering and self-punishment. I hope someone else knows the accurate history. In those times, as I understand it, the religious would flagellate themselves. They also might wear under their clothing a painful hair shirt. It must have been itchy and rubbed their skin raw. What exactly it was made of, I don't know.

So in this Heavenletter, God means that we are not to make ourselves suffer.
