International Day of Peace
September 19-21, 2008
Peace Conference
Youth Society for Peace

PEACE- Patience, Education, Attitude, Compassion, and Enlightenment, I must start with these five words because the entire conference revolved around them. The activities and the speakers all continued to return to these five words and how the youth could incorporate them into their lives and spread this meaning to others. While I wasn't able to understand a lot, I understood how compassionate and enthusiastic all the youth were to be there.
Youth Society for Peace (YSP) Nepal organized a three day programme to celebrate the International Day of Peace; 2008. The conference began with songs, speakers, dancing and games. Dr. C.M. Yogi began after a brief introduction and some beautiful songs sang by the youth. Through a mix of English and Nepali, peace was discussed in a way that really inspired the audience. His talk was interactive with the 5 meanings of peace discussed and incorporated into the day.
After, Mr. Sanjaya Aryal gave a talk on Child Soldiers. He asked the youth what they knew, and they were well aware of some of the problems that existed with the use of child soldiers. The chief guest speaker was Mr. Shankar Pandey, Secretary of Ministry of Education and Sports. He gave a wonderful talk and also commented on the how inspired he was. He encouraged the program to be organized in many other districts. The program also consisted of yoga and mediation and interactive friendship games. To watch the youth interacting with each other was a true sign and encouragement towards peace.
I was enlightened by the youth, their closing reflections were passionate and inspiring. While I was unable to understand completely what one young man reflected on, I could see how rewarded he was, how he was going to become his own personal change in the world and his own push for peace. Another amazing young woman gave a beautiful closing reflection all in English and it was very apparent that she had reflected on her own meaning of peace. It was well thought out and she would be able to teach many people what our world should look like. The day ended with beautiful singing and dancing. Once again, I could see and feel the positive energy from the youth. They were so happy to be there, so rewarded after, so enthusiastic for the future.
The International Day of Peace programme ended on Sunday, September 21st with a Peace Poetry Contest at Hindu Vidyapeeth-Nepal School . It was a pleasure to be able to witness such great examples of how to celebrate a wonderful day!
