In the Midst of Life
Are there not stories about those who took a magic potion and got everything they wanted? And yet those who got everything they wanted always had left something out. They wanted their true love to adore them, for instance, and then their true love adored them without question, and therefore their true love wasn't a real person any longer. The wishers would then wish that their true love did not truly adore them so much.
The wisher wanted love returned and, in so doing, left out free will. He left out a major portion of life. In so doing, he put his will above another's. He put artificial self-determined life ahead of the flow of natural life.
In life, you can throw the dice, and yet you cannot know what number will turn up. You can't know unless you are cheating, that is. But, of course, even with cheating, sooner or later, life rights itself. It gains its own balance. And life must be free to make its own way.
Of course, it is better to be an honest loser than a sham winner.
You can blow on your hands just before you throw the dice. You can say magic words. And yet you cannot control the dice.
Sooner or later, you leave the gaming table, and go home.
Even in the midst of life, you take what you call your losses and go home.
You may not know how lucky you are. It is undoubtedly fair to say that you do not know how lucky you are. At the time, as indicated above, you may not know how lucky you are to have your love unrequited!
Sometimes you get the funny idea in your head that you cannot live without this person or that, or that you cannot live without a raise or promotion or anything at all. You make many things essential to you when they are not essential at all.
Beloveds, you do not really possess your possessions. You certainly do not possess the people in your life. When all is said and done, you don't really possess yourself either. You certainly cannot have a stranglehold on life. Now you know that you are to let life go free. You can't chain it up anyway.
If you are to be without boundaries, then be without boundaries. Having to have life go a certain way and no other is a big boundary, beloveds.
There is not an exact recipe for life. There is no certain formula. And you don't need a certain formula anyway. What do you think you need a perfectly ordained life for? Why do you imagine that life has to be this way and not that? Can you not let life be what it is when it is? And can you not know how to treat whatever life delivers to you at a particular moment?
When you fall off a horse, you get back up on the horse as quickly as possible. When life does not go your way, get back in life and keep going forward. Let go, let go of the horse of the past. Kiss it goodbye.
When the dance is over, the dance is over. When the clock has struck twelve midnight, the clock has struck.
Where did you get the idea that you are to tie life up neatly and keep it just so? Beloveds, life is here for you to unwrap. That's it. You open up the package of life. You see what you have received. A new package will come tomorrow, and it too will be what it is. Sometimes it will be just what you wanted, and sometimes it won't. Isn't that all right?
Have your dreams and desires, beloved, and know that you are to let them be free even as you have them.
