Could it be that lonely in the second par. below has to be longing?

I can't translate this in Dutch, longing would make more sense to me...

You are lonely for your Self, and you feel hapless on a little raft in the middle of an ocean. Or you are at the top of a tree from which you don’t know how to get down.

I do believe the word given was lonely. Is it a grammar thing in Dutch, dear one?

Lonely is an adjective. Longing can be a noun. Long can also be a verb, I believe.

In any case, you are the translator, and you are making it the best Dutch translation you can. I would think that longing would work very well! In English, of course, we'd leave it as it is.
