Dearest Gloria,
I would like to know the exact meaning of 'cater to'. My dictionary says it means to 'provide for someone'. If this is the case, I don't understand the meaning here, as this seems to be in contrast to God's own words when He says to let go, as He will take care of all our needs.
You have a great Designer. A great Interior Designer. Naturally, you would like to be in on the design more. You would like to be consulted with. You want to know that you are noticed and heard and that your thoughts are taken to heart. I take you to heart, beloveds, more than I take your thoughts to heart. Do you see the difference? I definitely consider you.
This does not mean I cater to you, beloveds. I must consider more than your preferences. It has to be this way.
Love,
Paula
Most dear Paula, A caterer,
Most dear Paula,
A caterer, for example, will cater a meal for a wedding, let's say. He and his staff will buy, cook, and serve the food.
When God is using the expression cater to -- and the to is part of the expression, it is more like catering to someone's whim, more like over-doing it, perhaps spoiling a person. A man who has just fallen in love with a woman may want to cater to her every whim.
God can't cater to our every whim. He adores us without doting on us the way a grandparent might dote on a grandchild.
Does this make more sense now?
Thank you for your question, Paula!
Paula, on
Paula, on thefreedictionary.com when you search for "cater to" it gives you a second choice of "cater to excessively", and when you go there it sends you to "overindulge". That is the sense of the expression that Gloria is talking about. And that would be to overindulge someone else, not yourself. It's a somewhat informal expression, almost colloquial.
Thank you, Gloria and
Thank you, Gloria and Charles, this is what I thought, it's just that God didn't say 'cater to your every whim' or 'cater to excessively', just 'cater to', and cater to has the meaning of providing for the food, or whatever. So, I wanted to be sure.
Thank you,
Paula
