Heavenletter #4549 Hearts in the World

Dear Gloria,

My spelling check tells me there is an error, but I'm not sure about it:

"When I suggest that you love yourself, I do not mean praising yourself or some kind of over-blown view of yourself. I speak of Reality, the Reality of Self. However, what you call reality and what I call Reality are not the same thing. There are times when what I see and what you see could not be farther apart."

In Dutch we would say, "what you call reality and what I call Reality is not the same thing", but I guess in English you use the word are.

Thanks.

Hi, dear Luus! This is very

Hi, dear Luus!

This is very interesting the question you pose. At first I thought it is absolutely ARE because we use the word AND. If it were a sentence structure where we use OR, then then it would be the singular verb IS.

Do we say 1 and 1 are 2? Or, do we say 1 and 1 is 2?

I went to Google and found a site that would correct grammar errors.

I wrote both 1 and 1 are 2 and 1 and 1 is 2. Both were correct!

Looking at the Heavenletter sentence again, I had another thought:

The way I see it: What you call reality and what I call Reality are not the same thing:

The way you see it: What you call reality and what I call Reality is not the same thing.

IF the sentence had been worded slightly differently, we would probably be in agreement:

What you call reality and what I call Reality are two different things. Do you agree? If yes, then our difference has something to do with the last part of the sentence.

Of course, your translation into Dutch is not in question. Of course, you would do what is customary in your language.

I would leave the English as it is.

Thank you for your precision, dear Luus.

.

In this case, the word are is correct. Why? We would say:"Apples AND oranges are two kinds of fruit." The key is the word AND. In that particular sentence, we can't use the word OR
