Beloved Normand, a rung is literally a step on a ladder. Okay, every step of love is like taking a step higher on the Golden Ladder. Instead of using our feet, we climb the ladder with love as if love were our feet going up the ladder.
What are the places we put our feet when we climb a ladder called in French?

In french, the places where we put our feet when we climb a ladder are called "barreaux (transversaux)" or "échelons". If it a staircase we would called them "marches (d'escalier)".
