The Seeker and the Sought

God said:

All your life you have been holding on to something, and yet, and yet, you have been waiting for the arrival of something more. Your whole life long you have longed to catch Me and have not been exactly sure where to reach out. In the safety of My arms, you have tried to grasp Me. Like an unseeing man who doesn't know that he is wandering in his own home right in front of his favorite chair, you grope. You are the blind man who may think he is in a forest, or at the edge of a precipice when all the while he stands right where he longs to be and has only to sit down right where he is. He doesn't realize the space he is in. He occupies it unbeknownst to himself.

That is your Human predicament. You reach out for what is already yours. Blinded, you touch the surface of everything, seeking something irresistible that happens to be right within your grasp, but you look further a-field because you don't know what is already in your possession and you don't know that what you seek can never be wrested from you. So you possess what you don't know you possess and what cannot really be possessed, but only known, and only shared. You are already established in My heart. What more could you want?

We could say that I possess you, and you possess Me, but "possess" is too small a word for the Oneness of Us. Do you possess the water you drink? Do you possess the sun that shines for all? You have it, and it grants you life, but neither you nor the sun is owned, and, therefore, neither you nor the sun can ever be disowned. Whether you know it or not, We are inextricable, one from the other, because We are One. We are not twain. You are Mine, and I am yours, and that is the story of life.

Your arm belongs to you. It is part of you. Yet when do you claim ownership of it? You do not look for your arm anywhere. You don't proclaim: "I have discovered my arm. Look, it is right here!" It is so natural that your arm be where it is and have its churning motion for the purpose of bringing the world closer to you and giving more of you to the world. By your hands, your heart is known. Yet where does ownership come in? It is awareness We speak of.

You cannot have anything more than what you already have. You lack nothing but awareness. That's why you have not realized yourself as yet. You look for self-realization, yet, what have you squandered your attention on?

Your gaze has wandered. It has wandered everywhere. It is as if your eyes are glazed over, or your eyes seek someone else's diamond, unaware of the diamond deeply lodged within your own self. You even think someone else will reach in and locate your diamond for you. But you are the only one who can — precisely because you are the only one. Who else is there? We, you and I, and the multitude, are a union of One.

You don't wait for someone else to locate Me for you, because, when all is said and done, there is no one else. We exist, you and I, and that is the story. We have always existed in such close proximity and, yet, We do not encroach. We are so smooth-wheeling that Our tandemness is often not noted.

I let you go. That is the free will I gave you. I do not hold on to what is inextricably Mine, and you are Mine. And now you will come to know that I am yours, and nothing else is. There isn't anything else. We are the subject of Our story, and We are the plot. You digress. That is what you have ever done. You digress, but you cannot do that very well now that you know I am right here with you.

"You already are right where

"You already are right where you long to be" – what is so hard to accept about that?

The search has been called off, why am I still seeking? If I let myself sink into feeling that I'm there, always already there, what is this subtle checking that is still going on, this looking around with eyes closed, ferreting through the pockets of my heart, listening intently into ... what? Obviously, I don't believe it's right here. I still believe it has to be found. And I still believe that becoming aware is an action or event, and that there is still some "distance" that has to be covered. If there is no distance in whatever sense of the word, then all that remains to do for me is to ..... sit down like that blind man. Dear God, what is sitting down? No, don't laugh. Teach me.

now you will come to know

Almost a year later, do You see what I mean, dear God? Maybe I'm not looking quite so far a-field any more but it still escapes me that I already am where I want to be. And as You seem to imply, as long as I try to see, I will not see. What does it mean to become aware of what is there already? When what I'm looking and longing for is already the case, then, obviously, none of the known human faculties can reveal it or they would have long since done so. Perhaps the error is in looking for something else, something other than this. Should this be Your answer, I have still been doing way too much. Yes, I see, all seeking and striving is by logical necessity for something else and if, like my arm or breath, You are not something else, You cannot be found by that method. I'm coming back to leaning toward our Oneness. It is hard not to seek when you feel lack and a need to find.
