Can someone please tell me what is a counting song?
Sing a counting song, and you sing a melody of love.

It's like a nursery rhyme where there is counting. Like "1, 2, 3, button my shoe." There must be others. I just can't seem to think.

This is nothing to do with explaining what a counting song is ~ which you did admirably by the way,
but to tell you that I haven't heard anyone mention that song '1,2 Button My Shoe' in years!!!
My father, who was a professional musician, used to play that as part of his repetoire years ago.
He is in Spirit now, and has been for 28 years, but every time he comes to 'visit' me, he always arrives with that signature tune in my head first. I 'hear' it and then I start whistling it without even thinking what I'm doing, and then realise and say "Oh hello daddy!" :)
People I used to work with, got used to me whistling it every now and then, and each time I did, they used to say to me "Oh has your father just arrived?" and I'd grin and say "Yes ~ He's just come in"
Anyway, sorry for digressing here, but your remarks brought all of that flooding into my mind!

Three four knock at the door
Five six pick up sticks
Seven eight lay them straight
Nine ten a big fat hen
Eleven twelve dig and delve
Thirteen fourteen maids are courtin'
Fifteen sixteen maids in the kitchen
Seventeen eighteen ...er hmm can't seem to remember the last two lines!?!
Not bad though after all these years! :)
The actual nursery rhyme itself doesn't make any sense whatsoever though
But hey ho ~ there ya go! ;)

Yes, a counting song is a song like "one little, two little, 3 little Indians" these songs are helpful with youngsters who are learning to count as well as number recognition.
