How to Love

God said:

What does it mean that you are in service to Me? What does it mean that you live in the world on My behalf? What does that come down to in your daily life?

It means that you love.

But how?

When I say that your mission is to love, you heave a big sigh, and say with all your heart: “God, I would if I could. I would if I knew how. Believe me, God, I have tried. Some people are difficult to love. Here it is in a nutshell: I judge more easily than I love. I am an expert at judging and hardly a beginner at loving. I am sorry this is so. Sometimes I feel good love for someone or another, and often I feel great love for You. But I don’t have to deal with You in daily situations. You are not physical. You do not distress me. But people do. People do.”

Beloved, that you love doesn’t mean that you think everyone you come across is fabulous. It doesn’t mean you adore everyone. I do not ask that of you, for I know you are not always easy to please, and I know that not everyone else is either. I will tell you right now how you can begin to love.

Simply make life a little easier for the next person you see. That is all.

We do not speak at this moment of the mood of your heart. We speak of an intention. Your intention is to give service. This does not have to be a huge thing. A little service can be a great blessing. Maybe all you do is wipe up a spill or give someone a napkin or open a door or close the screen door. Perhaps you cook someone a favorite meal. Perhaps you smile. Perhaps the beginning of service that you give is to give silence and not say anything. Perhaps you simply don’t grumble. Perhaps you listen with your heart. That is always a great service.

If you cannot at this moment be a great light, you can still be light. I ask that you brighten, even a little bit, life that exists around yours. It can be for a stranger, or it can be for your mother. Who it is doesn’t matter. That you do it matters.

There is a fairy tale where the King has the thought that his beautiful princess daughter is to fall in love with the next person she sees. One way to look at this story is to say that I am the King who desires, not that you fall in love, but that you be open to love. I ask, with the next person you see, that you enjoin even a particle of love. Maybe it is a hello. Maybe it is anything at all that you can think of to do that says, to the one before you:

“Why, I am glad you are here. I am glad that we have met in passing. I am glad for the opportunity to look into your eyes. I am glad I am here with you. Even if we are here together for only the briefest moment, I will offer you an example of gladness. Even if we live together, I know that our meeting is but a brief moment, and I will also hand out a sample of gladness.”

At the end of this day, before you sleep, will you tell Me what life or lives you brightened and how you did it?
