Today Is Another Story

God said:

Your connection to Me is not a fragile thing. Your perception of Our Oneness, however, is.

Sometimes you listen to too much else and cannot hear My heartbeat. You hear only the negation of the world, and your own monotonous echo of the world's dronings. At those times, Our Union fades into oblivion, as if it were not there. Your myriad thoughts drown Me out, as if there were not room for Me, I, Who consume no room at all. Sometimes when you need a heart-lift the most, that is when you get hard of hearing Me, hard of seeing My hand on yours, hard on life and hard on yourself.

If you were not hard on yourself, you would not despair. It is yourself you despair of. It is not the circumstances as you would like to imagine. It is yourself you accuse. You accuse yourself that you are not living up to something in the way you have decided you should. The world has not honored you in some way, and you take it as a stab in your heart. You begin to feel that you have not succeeded because something is not as you had thought it would be.

Erase yesterday from your heart. The past is too big a burden to carry. It can only weigh you down. But today! — today is another story.

You will speak words never spoken before. You will love something today as never before. Drop off the past, and your heart is lightened.

Theoretically, you understand about letting go of the past. Yet you hang on to it like an old box to sort through. You are afraid there is something valuable you might throw out. Even though there is no room to keep it, even though it weighs you down, even though it is a burden, you keep it in the basement or the attic. You keep the past like an old moth-eaten shawl you cannot part with. You want it there to take out in case you want to run your hands over it. It has an association you are not quite ready to let go of.

This may be one instance when your mind is ahead of your heart. You heart says to keep it, even when it holds you back. Your mind, however, says: "What are you doing? Throw it out!"

The past is an addiction, and it has you in its thrall. Even a moment ago is the past. You can't seem to catch up, and yet you let the past cling to you. Happy or sad, the past must retreat. You can cut the cord and leave the past where it lies. You can do it. Get the past out of your way. When you sashay out of the past, you land in today. You arise innocent without predictions, for predictions are based on yesterday. When you no longer think of yesterday, you no longer regret. When you leave the past behind, failure is no longer a concept, certainly not one you live by.

You cannot fall short today because there is nothing to fall short of. With the past out of your keeping, what do you have to measure by? There is no box to put today in. You skip along today without measurements, comparisons, and long faces. Today can be what it is. Would you not enjoy today if you did not have a build-up of yesterdays?

Today can only succeed. It is here, all ready for you. It is a field of flowers. It does not have to be a field filled with roses and daffodils for you to enjoy walking through it. Enter into the field called today.
