I ASKED GOD
I asked God to take away my bad habits.
My beloved Father/Mother said: ‘No!
It is not for me to take them away, but for you to give them up.’
I asked God to make my handicapped child whole.
God said: ‘No.
You are both gathering valuable experiences through its condition;
Its spirit is whole and its body is only for a time.’
I asked God to grant me patience.
God said: ‘No.
Patience grows from enduring your trials and tribulations;
It cannot be granted, but has to be learned.’
I asked God to give me happiness.
God said: ‘No.
I give you blessings; happiness is for you to find – in Me.’
I asked God to spare me pain.
God said: ‘No.
Through Suffering and worldly cares you grow and learn;
They draw you closer to Me.’
I asked God to make my spirit grow.
God said: ‘No.
It has to grow on its own, through your life’s experiences!
You are a branch on the tree of life and knowledge,
And I will prune you to make you fruitful.’
I asked God for all the things in life that I might enjoy.
God said: ‘No.
I have given you life, so that you may learn and find
The wisdom and understanding that will help you
To appreciate and see all things, people and experiences
That may ever come your way, for what they truly are,
Namely gifts from Me.
And then I asked God to help me love others,
As much as H/She loves me.
God said: ‘Ah, at last you have got the idea
Of why you find yourself in this earthly existence.’
May God bless you and never forget that
To the world you might be one person,
But to one person you just might be the world,
And that even the word ‘impossible’ spells ‘I am possible’.

Dear Berit,
I could not find the thread where you posted your beautiful poem 'I asked God'. I wonder whether you can forgive me that have taken the liberty to polish your beautiful gem a little bit. I would like to publish it in the above form on my website and am wondering whether you would give me permission for doing so. Hope that you are well!
